The Brazilian Military Institute of Engineering (IME) finished the “World Cup of Programming”, closed on Wednesday (25) as the best university in Latin America in this year. Gathering only institutions of higher education, competition proposes that problems should be solved by algorithms, created with the help of computers.
In 26th place, the IME fared well. It was, for example, in front of all UK, French and German organizations. The renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) was just two places ahead of the IME, in 24th place – only three other U.S. universities fared better than the Brazilian. Another highlight of the tournament was the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) — my alma mater — who finished 36th. Check the final standings here.
The IME hit 3 issues, as well as UFPE. What differentiated the two was the time taken to solve the problems. The first positions were dominated by universities in Russia and China.
EMI and UFPE composed group of six institutions of higher education in Brazil who participated in the global stage of the 38th International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC), in Yekaterinburg, Russia. 122 universities gathered at Ural Federal University.
To participate, the Brazilians had to sweat. Promoted by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and sponsored by giant IBM, the “Programming World Cup” playoffs that had relied on 2200 institutions of higher education in 94 countries worldwide. During the competition, students had to solve real problems with the aid of computers.
