Internet in Brazil: Google gives awards to NGOs that use technology for social impact

The Google presented on Tuesday (8) the four Brazilian non-governmental organizations that won the Challenge of Social Impact award to those who submit the best ideas of how to use technology to improve the reality of Brazil. In all, Google has distributed R$ 7 million (over 3 million US dollars) to these entities (one million reais each).

Meu Rio was awarded for the project “My City Network“, which uses mobile applications to encourage residents to engage communities.

Conservation Internation Brazil stood out with the proposal to transform more sustainable fishing in extractive communities to launch an application that identifies the origin of fish and fishing methods.

The Instituto Zero a Seis was chosen for its idea of supporting the development of children in early childhood and their mothers by sending SMS to pregnant women and mothers of infants up to age three.

The fourth prize was selected in a vote in the open internet, who received 475,000 votes. The Geledés Black Women’s Institute will create an application to support women in vulnerable situations and who are victims of domestic violence.

Additionally, Google rewarded with R$ 500,000 the other six finalists NGOs. The ten entities submitted bids jurors Jacquelline Fuller, director of Google.org, Luciano Huck, presenter of TV Globo, Viviane Senna, social entrepreneur, and rapper MV Bill. Also attended the entrepreneur Josué Gomes, president of Coteminas.

Besides money, the winners will receive technical support from Google so that projects can come to life. Brazil is the third country to host this competition, after England and India.

In other editions of the challenge, some of the winners were an application to connect citizens to government, a program of lighting communities in Africa from the capture of solar energy and a program that follows the course of social projects and reconstruction in countries devastated by war.
