The sale of tablets in the country in the first quarter of 2013 increased 164% compared with the same period in 2012, reaching 1.3 million devices sold, according to a study by IDC Brazil released recently: in the first quarter of 2012, 493,000 tablets were sold.

The number in the quarter was higher than the total for the year 2011, when 1.1 million tablets were sold in Brazil, according to consulting group.

Comparing tablets with the PC market, the participation of the devices in the first quarter of 2013 was 27.6%, while 39.5% were left with notebooks and desktops with 32.9%. Regarding the operating system of the devices sold in the period, 89% have Android.

IDC’s expectation is that 5.9 million tablets to be sold during 2013, an increase of 81% compared to 2012.

One of the reasons listed by IDC is that the price of tablets attracts Brazilian consumers and impacts the sale of PCs in the country. “Tablets have become the most convenient option for users looking for a device cheaper, which consequently impacts on sales of PCs, especially laptops. Today you can find products around R $ 200 (nearly 100 US dollars), many unknown brands grabbing a hold of users seeking aspects such as mobility and content consumption on the Internet, “explains Peter Hagge, an analyst at IDC.
