Scientific research projects on sodium sulfur batteries, electric cars and high power lasers have been kicked off in Shanghai’s Jiading District: regarded as a “Science and Technology Satellite City” in Shanghai, the district has become a cluster area for scientific research institutes.

Jiading is now home to 10 institutes, a center and a base.

1. Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences:

It is the first and largest professional institute to research lasers. Its main subjects include high power laser technology, strong field physics and strong light optics, information optics, quantum optics and optical materials.

2. Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences:

It is a comprehensive research institute for high-tech innovation and application development. Main research areas cover artificial crystals, high-performance structural and functional ceramics, special glass, inorganic coatings, bio-environmental materials and energy materials.

3. Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences:

Centering on “electronic science and technology” and “information and communication engineering,” the institute conducts research on wireless information micro-systems, semiconductors, micro-structure materials and devices and nano-electronics materials.

4. Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences:

The institute puts an emphasis on photon science, nuclear science and technology and related cross-disciplinary research. Main subjects include advanced photon science, nuclear physics and civilian non-power nuclear technology.

Other institutes include Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics; Shanghai Institute of Laser Plasma, Chinese Academy of Engineering Physics; Shanghai Institute of Space Electronic Equipment, China Academy of Space Technology; Eighth Research Institute of Nuclear Industry; East China Institute of Computing Technology; Shanghai Institute of Microwave Equipment; R&D Center of Electric Vehicles, Chinese Academy of Sciences; Shanghai New Energy Vehicles and Key Auto Parts Industry Base; Ground Transport Wind Tunnel Laboratory and State Motor Vehicle Inspection and Test Center.

Also, Shanghai Auto Parts Global Purchasing Center will be completed by the end of the year.

Anting Town is trying to build itself into a transnational purchasing center, trade center and pricing center in three to five years. It aims to attract 500 to 1,000 enterprises and welcomes suppliers and buyers in auto research and development, training, consulting and e-commerce business.
